The 50.5 million Hispanics are consolidated as the first minority U.S.
The rapid growth of the last decade consolidated Hispanics as the largest minority in the U.S., they are now 50.5 million people, 16.3% of the population, according to figures released Thursday by the Census Bureau.
The 2010 Census results are particularly important because they made the process of redistribution of electoral districts in the country ahead of presidential and legislative elections of 2012.
Since the last census, in 2000, the Hispanic population increased 43% from 35.3 million people to the current 50.5 million, which means that currently one in six Americans has Hispanic origins. But although growth was greatest for Hispanics was lower than in the 1980s (53%) and 1990 (58%), according to a report from the Pew Hispanic Center analysis, which reviewed the figures disclosed on the day.
Currently Hispanics are far better than it used to be the largest minority in the country, the black population, currently with 37.6 million represents 12.2% of total more than 308 million. Non-Hispanic whites are still the majority, with 63.7% of the population, but its growth between 2000 and 2010 was only 1.4%.

Among those under 18, Hispanics accounted for 23.1% of the population compared to 53.3% of whites and 14.0% black.
"The white population is larger but is not growing as fast as the Hispanic or Asian, but that's part of the reality of the U.S., a country that is dynamic" demographically, said a spokesman of the census, Raul Cisneros , told reporters.
The census showed that Hispanics doubled in states where they were not traditionally represented, such as Maryland, North Carolina and South Alabama, Mississippi and Arkansas, although its concentration is still more important in states like California and Texas, said Cisneros.
The county has more Latinos is the Los Angeles, with 4.7 million. The state where it is, California has the largest Hispanic population of 14 million, followed by Texas (9.4 million), Florida (4.3 million) and New York (3.4 million).
Hispanic organizations and advocacy of immigration reform stressed that the findings of the census will confirm the weight of Hispanics in the 2012 presidential.
